It’s that time of year again, Canadian May 2-4 weekend, Victoria’s birthday, traditional time of year to hit the beach for the first time, or plant the garden, - all depending on your cohort. So.....how is your garden looking? Is it a vision of perfection, everything you want it to be, perhaps a little like Rosalind Creasy’s 100 square foot garden? Weeded to perfection all set to be planted, and photographed for her new book Edible Landscaping http://www.rosalindcreasy.com/.
Or does your garden look like this? Bits of stuff that came back from last year- yes I was warned about the mint- and weeds that think the weed barrier, cardboard pizza boxes and particle board you laid down to kill them is merely fertilizer.
How about some failed winter sowing and mutant taragon.
Or the partially prepped square foot garden .The chicken wire is there so the cats don’t use it as a litter box.
Look flowers. Johnny jump ups are edible.
Too bad crabgrass tastes so bad.
Yum dandelions. Honestly behind the dandelion is another square foot bed.
The buckets grew carrots last year; I know you thought they were for tomatoes.
Or the Jerusalem Artichoke which showed up on its own-at least I can tell people that it is an edible (the tubers are like potatoes without the starch).
And look mom I really did plant the cosmos you gave me.
I have more pictures and I will put them up if you need to feel better about your gardens. However, I have plans for this garden and I know (see how I didn’t use the word promise) that by the end of the weekend this garden will look entirely ...umm...better.
Anyone want to share pictures of their gardens?
And for those who have completely given up on trying to bend Mother Nature to their will remember that crabgrass is an edible; the seed can be used like couscous or to make beer. http://www.eattheweeds.com/www.EatTheWeeds.Com/EatTheWeeds.com/Entries/1946/12/23_Crabgrass_Was_King_.html
And around my house I tell people that dandelion salad is a good liver detoxifier - so they can drink more beer. Also, putting the dandelion in the chicken Caesar wrap and telling the kids that’s what home grown lettuce looks like works too.
By the way I’m Kathleen, Meg’s sister or as she calls me ‘minion’.
